End of Junior Season 2011.....

The LSVCC Junior cricket season ended on Wednesday night (28th Sept)
with a pairs cricket competition held on the main wicket. The winners
were Jake Richards and Neve Palmer (14 runs off 2 overs) with joint
second place on 13 runs taken by Luke Manning partnering Benjamin
Smith and Joseph Bates batting with brother Tommy.

The evening concluded with annual prize giving with trophies awarded
to James Price (Year 4 and under) and Sam Edgeley (Year 5 and over) as
the most improved cricketers of the year, as voted for by the junior
members. Congratulations to all players for another great season and
thanks to the parents for their ongoing support. Coaching sessions
have run for over 5 months this year, with an average of 25 children
attending each week......remarkably only one week lost to rain !! Some
of the juniors have represented the village team so congratulations to
them and watch out you senior members!

Big thanks again to Roy Palmer and Richard Smith who have run the Juniors this year, and also to the many parents and young helpers. We all look forward to next season !!

It's just not cricket....

But anyway, rain meant that the ASHES were cancelled on the day. Clive Shaw from the Church side decided that an alternative game of petanque could be played instead.....he should have considered where the strengths of his team lie. Sure enough the Village team strolled to victory with limited opposition from a Thrasher duo. Fun had by all, though somewhat soggy end to the season. President Hopperton cleverly sloped off without awarding trophy, and was last heard muttering that it wasn't cricket...also difficult to make ashes from a petanque ball. I think grudgingly we have to acknowledge a defeat of some sorts to the Village side and congratulate them on a well earned (and hopefully Pyrrhic) victory....until next year. Many thanks as ever to Kevin and Maria who provided excellent refreshments throughout the day....watch out for AGM date later this year.

Inaugural match played mid-season between The Crown and LSVCC....despite blanket secrecy in weeks leading up to game, usual suspects appeared (some quite reluctantly) for game. Played in good spirits, and after some fine cricket, the Little Staughton team emerged as worthy victors. Plentiful refreshments during day, and afterwards of course at The Crown. Many thanks again to Kev and Maria (shown here putting brave face on managerial duties). Also a note to record that the Juniors had an excellent game beforehand on square timed perfectly to miss heavy shower at end. Well done to Roy, Richard and Nick for organising....

The Crown Defeats Bertie’s Burger Bar

Following the successful Cricket Dinner on Saturday evening, Kevin and Maria are pleased to advise all of their patrons and customers that Bertie’s Burger Bar will not be making an appearance at any time in the future. They would also like to add that at no time were any negotiations in progress with Trust House 30. We also wish to make it very clear that at no time did Dotty Barking stay at the Crown, or even indulge in her less salubrious past times on the premises. “We are pleased to feature in any positive publicity” was the quote from Kevin Late on Saturday evening.

We are pleased to advise that our current developments centred on the refurbishment of the restaurant and development of the new improved menus will continue as planned. This is in spite of any upset or implied change that may have been apparent from events on Saturday evening.

Why not take advantage of our current offer for Sunday Lunch (no bear meat is used in the making of the lunches!!).

Well I can't remember....but that doesn't matter as the first CC dinner was a huge success. Murder Mystery enacted by the St Neots Players assisted medically by Dr Rege, and in inquiry by Mr Shaw. Have to say they contributed very little.....knife wound to hepatic artery through axilla very unlikely and obvious murderer not detected by one of the MET's finest. Excellent food, wine, service, and entertainment. Many thanks to the many people involved in this event....we raised over £2000 for LSVCC.

Not only the weather (and certainly not the tempers on display last week), but LSVCC form is hot !!....good toss to win on unseasonably warm Easter saturday allowed large total batting first against Great Barford. James Bidddle guesting again scored almost flawless 100, but worthy contributions also from AT (also hitting by far the biggest six of the day....authors privilege), JA (interesting style on occasion, see photo), OJ, and Hoppy. Charles and OM tied opposition down so total never really in danger of being reached...OT again bowled well for 10 overs taking a well deserved wicket thanks to Stokesy skills behind the stumps. Nice to see the level to which the adults are inspiring young supporters to take up the game......ablycoached (??) by Daddy Edwards, while Mummy Edwards buries her head in the complexities of scoring. Two wins out of two....can it continue ?....

First game of season started in glorious sunshine against Caldecote XI. LSVCC batting bolstered by James Biddle, Kym captain and guest for the day (47 runs on a track with some variable bounce !). Good contribution also from Hoppy. The writer of this blog then had to leave for radio interview in Cambridge while the sparks flew....story of the day was reported to be that of the 3 Ollies who bowled tightly and accurately to mop up the opposition wickets just short of the target. Charles and Jake also chipping in. Great start ! Thanks to the newly qualified officials who presided over the match....they have introduced new complexities into both pitch and scorebook marking !

For all junior cricketers of Kymbrook school age, there will be KWIK-cricket sessions on Wednesday evenings on Little Staughton playing field at 6:00 pm ....there will be a nominal charge of £10 per family for the season to cover costs of equipment, insurance, prizes etc. Sessions start on 27 April and are expected to run until October subject to weather.

First up LSVCC Juniors, of which up to over 30 have been turning out on the playing field each week under the watchful eye and skillful instruction of Roy Palmer and Richard Smith. Richard writes...

'We were again really lucky with the weather and had a fine day for the return match against Little Paxton this morning. Both the younger and older junior teams were looking to even things up after the matches earlier in the season in May.

The older juniors team captain, Joseph Bates, won the toss and elected to field first. A combination of tight bowling from Alex Wasilewski, Neve Palmer, Emma Edgeley and Jake Richards, and some good fielding including two well taken catches by Sam Edgeley restricted Little Paxton to just 22. The total was easily reached after a good partnership from Chris Feneley and Seb Wayles, and contributions from Tommy and William Bates. The team had learnt from the match in May and did well to keep the ball down and avoid being caught out and losing runs.

The younger juniors had a tougher game on their hands against a Little Paxton team who were warmed up and keen to get a victory after their first defeat. Captain, George Miller, kept up the 100% record for Little Staughton and won the toss, again electing to field first. Some good bowling from Laurie Stothard, Luke Manning and Ben Richards with contributions in the field from Luke, with a quick stumping, and a brilliant catch by Ben managed to keep the total down to 40. It was always going to be a big ask for the younger members of the team but a solid start by James Price and good batting by Joseph Smith with runs also coming from Joel Cain, Jack Squirrell, William Brightman and Benjamin Smith and at the end from Archie Tomblin and Tommy Bates brought them to a respectable total of 34.

So honours even at the end of the season .'

On to the (supposed) main event, Church versus Village...AT writes,
'Extraordinary scenes as Tony Moss's Village team (not to be confused with LSVCC) disintegrated to a score of one for eight (that is one run for eight wickets !!)...thoughts of Little Staughton entering the pages of Wisden were briefly entertained until recovery led by Nick Monsell with a detrmined score of 2 runs (extra credit for hitting the ball before it hit the stumps), Nick Cain with a massive top score of 8ish, and a few extras. Still, 18 all out was probably a bit light on a slow flat track....special mention of the athletic Richard Finch who caught a fast moving ball from the middle of Noels bat just inches from his face. Fired up by this wonderful piece of self-preservation, Mr Finch continued fearlessly to throw himself after the ball....chiropracters, osteopaths, and physiotherapists who are short of cash should contact him directly. Church team soon strolled to their first victory with only a couple of wickets down. Tony Moss graciously presented the Ashes Urn to the victorious captain Bernard Hopperton. As most of afternoon still remained, sun was shining, and drinks flowing, a new 20/20 game was played, mixed teams captained by Jake Cain and Oliver Thrasher....Jakes team in the end victorious (lasted a lot longer than the first match !). Cake stall manned by Lucy Newell and Ben Thrasher who managed to sell a huge number of wonderful cakes at inflated prices ! So thanks to all the village bakers, and also again to Kevin and Maria who very kindly provided (and donated) a splendid paella for cricketers and loyal supporters through the afternoon. A lovely day....

The Ashes will be kept in The Crown to remind everyone of these momentous annual occasions....

Finally, many will Remember Ginny Lumley's remembrance service earlier this year, after which her ashes were placed temporarily behind the bar while her friends and family enjoyed fish and chips in The Crown. A break in the cricket allowed Matt and Rebecca Brightman the opportunity to unveil a fine bench dedicated to her.....many villagers and friends gathered in front of the pavilion to once again raise their glass in memory...'

Presidents Game....

Hottest day of the year for first ever Presidents match hosted by Bernard Hopperton....pavilion fitted out with tv for those unfortunates wanting to view the football, but most chose to sit in shade under gazebos on boundary. Wonderful hospitality courtesy of Hoppertons, first class tea (thanks to Hazel, Helen and others), cool beer, and excellent paella to finish in pub afterwards. Opposition proved a bit more reliable than home LSVCC side whose batting let them down despite good all round efforts in field. Plenty balls to find in hedges !!....looking forward to repeat event next year....(minus the footballing distraction)...

Knock around with Farmers on friday, Maya's team eventually victorious over Olly's. Experimented with white ball which I thought was much easier to see coming out of dense forests at either end. However also provided new excuse for LS player after dropping catches complaining that they couldn't see it coming out of grey sky !!.....

LSVCC played Blunham on Sunday 6th June, stand in skipper OJ winning toss and electing to bat. the lighting quick pair of Moss and Shaw were sent out to open and with some solid defensive shots, a few swing and miss and a edge for 1, Clive was 1st to go in the 4th over. The 5th over was not much better with Tony missing his opening partner he followed him back on the 4th ball for 2, and Patrick came and went with a Golden duck that was to cost him later. Pete joined Richard smith at the crease and the pair started to amass some runs, Smith finally going for 11, caught playing one too many big shots. Price in his first game for the village played a nice shot back down the ground before being bowled following a bowling change for 5. this brought OJ batting at 7 to the crease in only the 11th over!! He and Pete were going along steady with OJ showing the bowler a lot of respect in the first over allowing him a maiden, this paid off the following over as 2 full toss were dispatched for 6's. this was by far the longest the LSVCC players had seen Pete go without a fag, and a pint seems this was now here, and a tired looking shot saw him fall for a creditable 21, Arch joined OJ for the last 7 overs of what should have been a long 7 overs for the Blunham fielders but one full toss too many and Jody was too quick on his shot the ball hitting middle stump as bat was over left shoulder and eyes looking towards swings where ball should have gone. Clive Burchett was next in, and as he came OJ topped edged one to fine leg falling for 57. Jake Cain came in and played some nice shots, hitting 5 4's in his quick fire 22, Dad Nick learning from son got off the mark with a 4, before being last man out for 5.

Rain then interrupted play and following a few Zzzzz's on the cradle both captains agreed that the pub was the best option.

Weekend of cricket....

Started well with exciting win against St Neots Methodist side....Hoppy scored more runs than whole of last season and had to retire ! Jody also contributed well....particularly bowling a tight last over to secure final victory ! Fish and Chips and Beer to follow...

Moving (briefly) on to the Thurleigh 6-a-side competition on bank holiday monday. We had secured ringer Ian from Great Barford team (who also played for methodists). LSVCC (represented by AT, Hoppy, Olly, maya, Nick, Jake, Will and Ian, supported by Pete) played well first game despite relative youth and old age, but succumbed to eventual winning team from Thurleigh (surprise !). However, accumulation of injuries both physical and psychological saw batting deteriorate...at end of what has to be say was an enjoyable day, we played 4 and lost 4.

I blame the captain entirely, who failed to inspire an enthusiastic team despite pie and champagne between matches !!....

Little Staughton Juniors.....

Our “younger” juniors came very close to winning against a Little Paxton team who were on average at least a year older, and considering one of our team had only started playing cricket a week earlier this was a very good performance. Little Paxton batted first in a Kwik Cricket game with each player facing 6 balls. They scored 77 after some great fielding and backing up from our juniors restricted their big hitters from making it to a 100. A good opening knock from Joseph Smith followed by some excellent support from Ben Richards, Benjamin Smith, Danny Wayles and Archie Tomblin, plus some valuable runs from the new team members William Brightman, who decided to bat left-handed to fool the opposition, and Joel Cain brought us within touching distance of Little Paxton’s score. A brilliant captain’s innings from Laurie Stothard, including a big six, almost sealed the game but unfortunately we fell just short with a final score of 72.

Our “older” Little Staughton juniors played pairs cricket facing 2 overs each against an even older Little Paxton team (all around age 12) who the previous week had been practising the reverse sweep. Yikes! Despite playing well and scoring about 90 runs (against Little Paxton’s 61 with no wickets lost), our team unfortunately managed to lose a few wickets. The ball really was lively and had a tendency to fly up off the bat and get caught as most of our players found out, some more than once! The team was: Adam Richardson (Captain), Sam and Emma Edgeley, Neve Palmer, Tommy, Joseph and William Bates, Rosie Stothard, Connor Finch, Libby Brealey, Jake Richards and Zak Hall.

Congratulations to all those involved for exciting matches and showing plenty of promise for the future. Pride was restored later at the barbeque when we clearly ate and drank Little Paxton under the table by a considerable margin! We look forward to a return match in August.

ps the least said about the senior team who were soundly thrashed afterwards the better.....

SUNDAY 16TH MAY 2010 A MEMORABLE DAY

"Expectations were high on Sunday but never did we expect the response we got. A huge thank you to everyone that came along to watch and especially those that helped out on the day cricket returned!

The day started with two youth games Litte Paxton under 9's and Under 12's both ending victorious against Little Staughton Village CC. A very encouraging and welcome sight over over 40 youngsters playing cricket and warming the crowd up for the 'big event'!

Peter Hagger Chairman of the Parish Council officially opened the cricket field during a short speech during which we remembered Jenny Bartlett daughter of our Chairman Vic who sadly passed away in the morning. Paxton won the toss and in front of a crowd approaching 200 (how many County teams would like that size of crowd? ) elected to bat. Ian McGraw, Elan Anish and Wayne Huttly were the main stays of the innings that totalled 252-6 after 40 overs. A new club highest score! In response wickets soon tumbled but with some stability restored Staughton reached 111-3 before wickets started to fall rapidly. Mike Kimpton and Elan Anish tore into the middle order and before long with both bowlers ending an over on hat-tricks Elan polished off the last wicket with the third ball of the over. A staggering win by 141 runs for Paxton - our first win over our neighbours!

An exceptional day for all of us associated with the club - we are back next Sunday with our first home league match against Upwood II with a 1.30pm start."

Many thanks to Martin Banks for all his sterling work and support for the club. He voluntarily stood down to make way for Bernard Hopperton as President....however, Martin plans to play an even more active role in future club activities. Also congratulations to Ollie Jordan (best bat), Olli Middleton (best bowler), Richard Smith (clubman of the year), The Newell family (family award), and especially to Jake Cain who was awarded the Cliff Hopperton Cup for most improved player over the season. Special mention was made of Clive Shaw (needs most help), and Pete Pullan (for long hours maintaining pitch). Many thanks to all officers of the club, particularly to James Hopperton for getting teams on the pitch, and Roy Palmer for sustaining a thriving junior section. All bodes well for next season.....

Under 30's versus over 30's 2 innings match in warm conditions of true Indian Summer. Once again, top class fun organised by OJ. Veterans compromised by Test match pace opening partnership in first innings, dodgy umpiring, and it has to be said some highly skilful performances from younger members of the U30's. For over 30's injuries included one groin strain and black eye sustained by CS attempting to catch ball with nose......we will all return next year older and wiser.

Wonderful end of season juniors match against Little Paxton on playing field....LSVCC juniors running out narrow last over losers, but all played excellently and represented the club with distinction. Well done to all, not least the coaches !

Little Staughton ASHES 2009.....

Towards the end of summer now, but fine day for now traditional (second anyway, last year rained off) LS ASHES...for those not at the first fixture, the ashes arose from Freddie Pullans bat which was cremated in CS's fire after shattering. Now encased in copper pot and awarded each year to winning team of Church (captained by Bernard Hopperton, sadly injured and off for knee replacement the next day) versus Village (nimbly skippered by Charman of PC Tony Moss). Large crowd gathered throughout day to watch firstly a juniors game of KWIK CRICKET on square, then highly tense last over finish in which OJ scraped the Village side home again through mixture of big(ish) hits, and multiple lives (dropped catches). Highlights included a 5-for from Daniel of the Church side, quite possibly the most ludicrous golden duck (RS) achieved through an acrobatic pirrouette leaving the bat face down on top of stumps, and Mr Finch's resurrected cricketing skills and bad back. Scorers kept calm despite increasing pressure as end neared....many thanks Catherine and umpires Roy and Martin !

The first LSVCC Junior prize giving was held after almost 30 juniors (age 4 to 12) attended a series of junior matches on the main wicket. Well done to Neve Palmer’s team on winning the deciding match, a narrow victory. Certificates were presented to all juniors with 2009 prize medals (awards for younger juniors and older juniors in each category) going to:

Best all rounder - Tommy Bates and Michael Richardson.

Best bat - Laurie Stothard and Adam Richardson .

Best fielder - Jake Richards, Joseph Bates.

Best catcher - Joseph Smith and Sam Edgeley.

Keenest cricketer - Benjamin Smith and George Miller.

Tried the hardest - James Price and Neve Palmer.

Most entertaining cricketer - Jacob Jones and Emma Edgeley.

Well done to all our juniors - it is fantastic to see real progress being made.

To complete a successful season, there will be a regular practice session on Wednesday 9^th at 6 pm followed by a match against Little Paxton Juniors on 13^th September, 2pm.

The 2010 season is expected to start first week after Easter, tbc. Any queries, contact Richard Smith or Roy Palmer.

Most of all thanks to Tony and Bernard for organising the day, and to Kevin and Maria for suppling refreshments and spectacular paella to finish. Also to Roy Palmer and Richard for all hard work with Juniors over the season.

Kimbolton Castle Rotary Challenge....

Another glorious day for challenge set down by Kimbolton Castle Rotary Club. Some confusion as to who was in Rotary and who would play for Village side, but by tea each team had 11 players (or participants). Rotary side batted well to reach 117, including fine knock from CS (why he doesn't do that for LSVCC I don't know), and glimpses of fine cricketers from the past. Captain Moss missed out again trapped in front of stumps.....blamed umpire and the pitch. Newcomer Charles bowled well for three wickets (including near hatrick), and Ben T caught fine catch of his own bowling. Dad T dropped sitter behind stumps (sorry OJ). However, spectacles needed for PP who failed to spot that CS was 3 feet out of crease when bails whipped off....

LSVCC batted solidly, including undefeated 30 from CB, and a few lusty blows from NM. Big guns lower down order not needed, and trophy secured at same time as Ashes victory at Oval with MT and skipper JH still at crease. All retired to Crown for pork, trimmings and well earned refreshments. David Watson, president of Kimbolton Castle Rotary presented unique trophy to skipper, and man of the match to Tony Moss, captain of the losing side....challenge to be resumed next year.

Searing heat for evening game against St Neots Methodists....standin-in skipper (AT) opted for shade, while opening bats Moss and Shaw opted for cool test match style approach. OJ sent in to up the pace, should have been out twice on boundary, and eventually miscued for disappointing single figure score. AT rescued innings with decent 36 (retired) but booed off pitch for running out daughter (MT). Scrambled to 96 runs off 16 overs, despite widespread confusion on last ball. LSVCC fielding and bowling excellent all round....OJ made up for dismal batting, and spin twins PP and OT kept scores down. Sprinkling of wickets for all, and a good last over victory for home side.....

Little Paxton Match Report: Sunday 5th July

With Hoppy not playing Ollie J won the toss and on a nice sunny day in Staughton, well apart from the sharp shower about an hour before the start, and a nice looking track (cheers Pete), there was only one option: bat 1st!!!!

Moss and Arch were sent out to open and a quick start was made, a few swift blows and some quick, yes I said quick singles started the board ticking, until Tony had, had enough of Jody's running and took a big swing at a straight one and missed, 1st wicket down. This brought OJ to join Jody and the pair started to form a decent partnership, with some good running, some big hits and a lot of luck from little paxton drop catches. After seeing off the opening bowler, a change of bowling at the dog poo bin end saw to the end of Arch (38 from 45 balls [thanks to the paxton scorer for marking the dot balls in the score book!!])

Phil W and Pat came and went, the latter LBW to an Easy one for Mr Banks to look at. Glen Joins OJ and sets his stall out he's not hanging around for long. A change of gloves later and OJ hits 6 over the childrens play area to bring up the 1st LSVCC 100. Phil Day replaces the retired OJ and He and Glen are not in the mood for running as balls fly to the ropes. with the 200 coming up and 8 overs left, will N replaces Glen (another Not Out knock) and comes back first ball to one that loops onto the top of the bails. Ben W replaces Will and shows him how it should be done. Batman Robbins then replaces the not out Phil with 4 overs to go and has a swing first ball, when Ben finally departs following a solid looking knock Ollie M join the love of his life and lets just say the running was not the best!!! Ollie lost his wicket with just over an over to play, and LSVCC decided not to send OJ back in so with 3 players retired and 1 not out a score of 231 for 7 dec was posted.

Following Tea, Clive took the new ball from the Greys Grove end, and should have had a wicket first ball but for Roy boy not agreeing it was going on to hit the stumps after the batsman forgot he had a bat and used his pads!! OJ then dropped the 2nd ball from a faint edge behind. Batman joined him in taking the ball from the dog poo bin end, and looked to be straight into his stride with some quick deliveries outside the off peg. these two kept balling well and deserved a wicket if not too but it took a change of balling with ollie M taking over from Clive and after testing the batsmans ability and the keepers by spraying the ball all over the place, then getting the batsman to nick one behind with Oj taking a straight forward catch. As Jody rang the balling changes with good spells from all involved (Phil W, Phil d, Ben W, Glen) little paxton managed to move slowly but surly towards their target with out losing wickets along the way.
At the 20 over drinks break Pat departed from the fray falling ill, leaving the fielding rotation easy, all players now on the pitch. with 28 overs balled and the target getting closer their opener passes his 100. A change in plan was formed and Phill D took over behind the stumps and OJ joined the attack to try and slow the run rate down a little. With good spells coming in here from all and the Fielding picked up a little with everyone not wanting to see defeat.

coming in to the final over LSVCC seemed to have done enough leaving Paxton needing 15 from 6 balls and glen balling the final over. With Oj setting a field of EVERYONE on the ropes, the bats man took a couple of byes, and then a wicket 13 off 3 and a new man on strike. with one swing of the bat make that 7 off 2, another bye leaving 6 off 1. Glen looked a little nervous at this point lets hope thats a feeling him and his fellow country men have all summer, but with a good delivery paxton were restricted to 1 from the final ball leaving a LSVCC victory by 5 runs.

A good win in the end, in what was a very enjoyable game.

Close victory against old foes from the Aircraft Research Association

Career best innings from Patrick Dignan, assisted by home umpires unsual interpretation of the no-ball rule half way through innings. ARA never really in the chase, although Hoppy tried his best in penultimate over to gift the opposition an unlikely victory through a series of full tosses and long-hops. Ollie Jordan watching from sidelines as getting married in the morning and didn't want to risk good looks.....spent night in pub instead.

By the way, signed up membership is currently 27 adults, and 43 juniors...not bad for a small club. Also thanks to all for paying subs in good time....except that is President Banks who is still to cough up !

First friday evening match a rather soggy event. Visitors from Little Paxton, also a reforming local cricket club. Fun had by all, LSVCC had upper hand when rain and gloom stopped play....meant an early retirement to The Crown for fish and chips. Highlights included Ollie Jordan's unbeaten 50 (although he now has a few balls to find), Glens unbeaten knock from down-under. Hoppy's multiple attempts to get himself out, and Patricks demon bowling (remarkable). Rematch eagerly awaited.....

2nd LSVCC Single Wicket 3/5/09

Sunday 3^rd May saw 14 of Little Staughtons finest take to the playing field for the 2^nd LSVCC Single Wicket Competition.

In true village style the 12pm start soon became a 12.30 ish start, with Jody setting the standard with some very energetic running between the wickets, and a total of 55 of his 4 overs.

The first wicket of the day did not fall until the 4^th batsman, and was a family affair with Thrasher senior bowling Junior Thrasher (Ben). Following this wickets started to become a little bit more of an recurrence, and the first run out came about off of the bowing of Pete Pullan, with James running out newbie Clive.

Notice must be made of the tactics of Peter F, giving Simon Stokes a wide down leg, then one outside off, followed by the straight which was in turn missed by Stokes the rest is history.

In the end the event finishes with a Tie, with both James and Adrian finishing with a total for the day of 59. The pair took to the net for a 3 ball bowl off, and with Adrian determined to win it with spin, and Hoppy hitting the deck forgetting it was concrete, the on looking spectators (well players), were starting to think it may be time to take to the pub and settle this with a drink off, when Hoppy chucked down a full toss taking out off peg, and our champion for 2009 was crowned.

Little Staughton Village Cricket Club

The 2nd LSVCC AGM was held at The Crown on Saturday 6 December. The previous season was judged to have been extremely successful, and the result of many contributions from players, families and supporters. Topics discussed included the 12 2008 fixtures, future fixtures, and club development. One of the most rewarding things of the last season was the involvement of youth in the club. No more so was this evident than the Kymbrook Lower School coaching sessions organized by Roy Palmer each week. These activities are very important and also enable extra funding from English Cricket Board (ECB) with whom LSVCC is now officially affiliated. LSVCC has now adopted the ECB safe hands policy as part of its official constitution. Some youth members had even been seconded to play for other clubs in the region. Playing field facilities were discussed, as the opportunity exists to obtain a grant from Biffa Waste Disposal to provide water and toilet amenities for players and spectators alike. To assist the Parish Council in their consideration of an application for these funds it was unanimously agreed that LSVCC would submit a proposal and business plan to them. Other important developments included the refurbishment of the pitch roller, and purchase of a dedicated wicket mower.

Clubman of the Year-Adrian Thrasher

Fundraising events were discussed as these are now essential for survival of the club. Recurrent money is required for equipment, indemnity and liability insurance, and hire of facilities and services. Bernard Hopperton said he would delighted for the club to use his barn again, this time for a joint Church and CC venture that would raise money for both concerns. Potential for a Village fete to coincide with some cricketing activity on the playing field will also be considered. A match against the Church will be arranged again next season. Other CC entertainments are currently being organised, including a springtime club dinner…..for the dates of forthcoming LSVCC events please keep an eye on the Little Staughton Village Cricket Club website, either at http://lsvcc.blogspot.com/ or following the link on the village website http://www.littlestaughtonvillage.co.uk/

Last outing of season....struggling with a few injuries (see below), but spirited batting recovery led by Olly Middleton and reliable though out of touch Jody. 127 never enough against Kimbolton side, despite some useful bowling from Maya, James and the Olly's. Played in good spirit in lovely setting. Fielding practice to be an agenda item at AGM later in year......even though Patrick wasn't playing. By the way, decent catch from old man T (keeper) sprinting to skied top edge and diving full length....

Two games this weekend, both unfortunately going the wrong way for LS. First against Blunham 3rd XI was creditable perormance particularly by bowlers, though 6 catches spilled and multiple extras....not helped either by their skipper who scored 100. However, fledgling side managed a good 138 in return so no embarrassment there. Notable bowling by Olly Middleton (who also found the middle of his bat on several occasions) and Olly T, who bamboozled and bowled a beauty round one victims legs. Stand in skipper Dad T unfortunate to be given out on boundary as fielder stepped over ropes...at least according to Maya T and Olly T ! Next day against Great Staughton, again bowling was excellent and they were restricted to less than 150....4 excellent wickets for Maya, but too many catches spilled again (Patrick please note). Unfortunately none of the batters really got going, so ended up 20 odd short despite Mayas valiant and painful last stand.....both games played in fine spirit.

'Yesterday in an abrupt change of policy we went from Help the Aged to a Youth, Grave to Cradle, halving the average age. It certainly showed in the field with the 14 year old Maya from Little Staughton showing electrifying speed and an arrow-like throw. Her run out was a highlight, and she was also the only person to take two wickets. Her diminutive (but only in stature) 9 year old brother Ollie's leg spin deserved a wicket, fresh from Beds v Essex Under 11, but a catch went down. They inspired their old man Adrian to a tumbling catch behind to dispose of the dangerous Goosen.......'

From LS Parish Council minutes....June meeting

An email from Adrian Thrasher was read out regarding approaching Biffa for funding for a water supply, toilet installation and a sink, in the pavilion. The Council considered the benefits that these facilities would bring but expressed concern regarding the additional long term expenditure that would be incurred, eg, water and sewage rates, council tax, maintenance, insurance, etc. Councillor Llewellyn feels strongly that the Cricket Club should be asked for a donation towards the pavilion’s upkeep.
After some discussion, it was agreed that the Chairman should respond to the Cricket Club that while the Council does not anticipate providing toilet facilities at the present time, the matter will be kept under review.

ARA take 2....

The second encounter of the season between LSVCC & the ARA took place on Friday night, and saw stand in skipper Ollie J win the toss and decide to bat. The opening partnership of Shaw & Arch got off to a flyer before Shaw went bringing Ollie J to join Jody in hitting the ball around the ground...except, this did not go quite to plan with OJ going cheaply, Tom Lumley coming and going and Ollie Thrasher playing a test match innings (all text book I must say!!!). Jody finally retired on 51, and at the end of the LSVCC innings, Pete & Maya had taken the score to 106 in 18 overs.

The ARA innings started well for LSVCC as Ollie M clean bowled their opener, and Ollie J bowled a tight 1^st over from the other end. The bowling from here on in was shared around the team with all bowling at least one over, Richard Smith throwing him self around behind the stumps as if he had been given a new lease of life. With all bowling very tight and the fielding being top notch, Tom Lumley picked up a wicket thanks to a good catch from OJ, and OJ then picked up a caught and bowled off his second over. The game went to the final over with ARA needing 11 off 6 bowls and Jody to bowl, and as such the plan went wrong as the second ball was dispatched to cow corner and through a diving Pete P for 4, the next ball followed in the same direction this time for a maximum and with the field right up in a tight ring a half volley outside off stump was dispatched to covers for 2, and an ARA win.

A good night had by all and some great food and drink down the crown after, even if OJ was dressed like a refresher bar.

Cricketing day for LS residents:
Maya and Olly played for Blunham in morning...Maya bowled too short and out to long hop so very cross and sulky. Counselling from dad lead to determined and excellent performance in afternoon against friendly Gamecox side. In fact Maya top-scored for LSVCC with 18 runs. Excellent performance by bowlers and fielders (excluding skipper Hoppy who needs practice, counselling or both) to limit good side to 154. Really should have chased that down over 35 overs but senior batting was poor....Dad Thrasher now cross and sulky, but looking forward to rematch next year ! Lovely day in the sun so a bit unexpected as so much rain in week and pitch waterlogged up until yesterday....

Baptist Chapel Game...

Despite the weather looking unsettled a large crowd (by Little Staughton standards) turned out to see Caleb Saunderson's chapel XI take on the unbeaten Little Staughton side. The chapel batted first and reached over 120 with some wickets to spare. The Staughton side all bowled at least one over each with the youngest being under 10 years old and the oldest being over 60, bowling 2 overs each. The team was carefully captained by James Hopperton with added sledging from vice captain Jody Arch. Jody scored the highest score and knocked two balls right out of the ground. Will Newell celebrated his birthday with the second highest. During the last 10 overs the chapels target started to look out of sight but an exciting last few overs saw a close victory to Staughton.

The combination of fine weather and a good pitch (with some bounce !) allowed a 35 over match. Despite some dropped catches and an early batting collapse, a sterling performance was made against Kimbolton with a score of 184, winning by 2 runs with just a few balls to spare and nobody left to bat ! Ollie Middleton hit two boundaries to secure the victory, which makes up slightly for his shocking batting performance last time, and earns him Man-of-the Match award. Top scorer was Jody who hit a good proportion of the runs and kept the rate up nicely. Good bowling performances from Bob, Jeremy, Ollie M, Ollie J, Jody and James though a good few wides too. Here’s to the away game on 21^st September....need some catching practice before then, particularly Hoppy !

Sun appeared for LSVCC single wicket competition. Over 20 entrants aged 9-old...Somehow Ollie Jordan (organiser) managed to win !....but well done to him for excellent day. Notable highlights included Noel clutching 3 balls at once, Ollie Jordans first baller from Tom Lumley, and Mayas dismissal to a pea-roller (bowled by Dad). All youngsters plyed superbly, particularly Tom, Olly, Ben (W), and Peter. Special mention of Ben (T) as highest ranked youngster . Great fun to be repeated next year for sure....

Formal constitution agreed by all present, and committee for 2008 elected.....President (Martin Banks), Chair (Adrian Thrasher), Secretary (Jason Newell), Treasurer (Richard Smith), Captain (James Hopperton), Member (Jeremy Jacobs), Junior Member (Oliver Middleton). Agreement on membership subscription of £20 to cover insurance and equipment costs.....aim to try and get as many playing and non-playing members as possible to support club. Mumbai trials....

U15 trials for Mumbai team at Wankede stadium...followed by Mumbai versions of club cricket in front of 'VT'....overlapping pitches, no marked boundaries, all and sundry walking on pitches during games, makeshift pavilions to shade from sun...all made LSVCC look like Lords. LSVCC winter side-tour to India....cricket played in Chrapungee (wettest place on the planet except LS), Himalayas (some of highest cricket grounds), Kolkata (including visit to Eden Gardens, 2nd largest cricket ground in world), and ending up on beaches in Goa (our youngest representative impressing all locals)....final stopoff in Mumbai where I'm sure we can find some more cricket related activity...maybe should send full touring side soon !!...Happy New year to all back home.

THE LITTLE STAUGHTON ASHES.....

During the inaugural match between the church and the village a bat being used by one of the church openers was punishing the village bowlers so much that it split, well cracked. Alternatively, it cracked because it was unaccustomed to the weight that fell on it as a runout was avoided.

Later that evening, at a gathering in the Crown, the general consensus was that the fixture should become an annual event and thoughts turned to a trophy. With a clarity of thought that is often associated with the mind freeing qualities of ale it became obvious that the'bat' should become the Ashes. The owner, Freddie (Pullen not Flintoff), generously agreed to the proposal, although then displayed a degree of sentimentality by delaying delivery for some weeks, rather like his bowling.

The urn was acquired and a magnificent wooden plinth was prepared by the craftsmen of Woodwork II, Bedford College.
Finally, the bat was ceremoniously burned a specially prepared fire so that nothing would contaminate the Hallowed Ashes.

The trophy was presented to the 2007 winning Captain, Tony Moss by Church Captain Bernard Hopperton with the words 'we'll be back..'

Such is the stuff of legends!

End of season celebrations in The Crown, with awards to Will Newell, Ben Thrasher and Gregson for best newcomers, Bob for best bowler, James (H) for best batter (being generous), and to Dad and Olly Middleton for best father son entertainment. Special award to Clive for alround contributions....Clive also unveiled for the first time the 'Little Staughton Ashes' to be contested each year between Village and Church sides (notes on this to follow). This year handed (grudgingly) by Church side captain Bernard Hopperton to Village captain and Master of Ceremonies Tony Moss. Special note of thanks to umpires Martin Banks and Roy Hopperton, fixtures secretary Jason Newell, all the ladies who have contributed to teas, and to Kevin and Maria at The Crown for cut price beer and fine food. All looking forward to successful season in 2008, pitch preparations already underway !....

Some highlights from the rather complicated statistics...batting averages first (Jody 75 (3 innings), AT 43 (4 innings), Hoppy 40 (3 innings), Phil Wayles 35 (2 innings), Noel 30 (2 innings), Gregson 22 (2 innings).....Maya and Olly Middleton on 10, Olly Jordan wasn't out (35 runs in 2 innings). Bowling, John Cutts started his only match with 5 for 18 off 5 overs, Jeremy (last seasons bowling award) 3 for 55 off 11 overs, Bob 7 for 60 off 12 overs, Olly T 4 for 49 off 7 overs, Maya T 2 for 20 off 7 overs, Ben T 2 for 8 off 3 overs, Jody 5 for 6 off 5 overs, Olly Middleton 1 for 46 off 11 overs, and Richard Finch 2 for 20 off 3 overs. AT stumped 4, and everybody dropped catches..........must also add note to record crucial contributions from all players not mentioned here.

Church v. Village.....

Our President writes:

Our season draws to a close as hot summer days shorten to golden autumn evenings. The sun shone briefly and the light faded towards the end of the day. But it was a great for the village, an entertaining cricket match between the Church team captained by Bernard Hopperton and the Village team captained by Tony Moss. Additionally over 200 hundred balloons were released at tea time, as the finale to the fund raising for more children's play equipment. Thanks to Louise King for arranging and leading the work. After the game Mary Jordan conducted the first draw of the village 200 club. Results are published on the web and in the next newsletter.

The Church team won the toss and decided that they would field first. The village got off to a solid start as Jody Arch quickly assembled 30 runs and then retired. The first round father and son competition was engaged with Olly Middleton bowling and Dad Noel batting. Freddie Pullan had to face the demon very slow bowling of Dad Pete. Of course the biggest challenge was to Adrian who had to contend with daughter Maya batting, but he successfully missed a stumping chance. The main benefit of the innings was that the scoreboard kept ticking over. Alas wickets fell as well James Moss and Fred contributed a few runs before Noel came in. Noel played well even with his limping running! Maya was still stroking the ball around the field. Eventually Richard and Tony replaced Noel and Maya. Still the runs were being added. Kevin replaced Richard and Tony was dubiously run out (again), for Gregson to join the fray. Kevin saw the innings through with Ryan after Gregson succumbed. The bowling suffered a little as the batting was building a good score, but all contributed to a good match. A great innings with a target set of 136. Which would be challenging as the light was beginning to fade.

Time for tea, and time to thank the "Wonderful Tea Ladies" for providing savouries and cakes in the best of cricket traditions. All washed down with orange squash and local ale from The Crown.

The Village team took to the field and Church team led by Bernard and Clive started to bat. Bernard was bowled early on, but Clive provided dogged resistance, including breaking Freddie Pullan’s bat! (we can burn the bat for an ashes trophy). Olly Feltz came in next and played a few good strokes and after Clive was bowled LBW, Olly Middleton was in. This spurred a change in bowling on came Dad Noel, who duly did the deed by getting his son out! Fortunately for the Village the scoreboard was not turning over too quickly, but a succession of wides and no balls proved the generosity of the Church team. Next Dad in was Peter Pullan, but unfortunately Fred could not follow Noel, and bowl him. Eventually Peter was out and in came one of the big guns Adrian. Adrian hit a few meaty blows and was soon joined at the wicket by James Hopperton. Expectations were high of quick runs being added. Then Adrian's son Olly came on to bowl his leg spin. An interesting contest was expected. However in his second over, Adrian hit a ball short and called for a quick run, but "Lead Boots" Hopperton had not moved very far from his crease. Alas Adrian was run out, much to the delight of Olly. The church tail did not wag for long after James was superbly caught and bowled by Jody. Mark and Michael did contribute a few more runs before the inevitable final wicket fell. The match end with a victory for the Village by over 50 runs

A resounding victory for the Village and commiserations to the Church team. Better luck next year.

We also gave a few over for the younger players at the end of each innings, which gives them a chance to experience the game.

Thanks got to the umpires, properly dressed and attired for the day, Martin Banks and Roy Hopperton - you must get some glue for your hat!

Thanks to Catherine and Alison for scoring, albeit quite tricky to keep the numbers on the board with the strong breeze!

After the match we retired to the Crown for pork rolls - Pig donated by Bernard and James -and cooked by Kevin and Maria who stayed open to serve the rolls and a few glasses of well earned beer. So started the inevitable stories and tales of heroics as befits such a sporting event.

A big thanks to all who turned out for the day - Attendance count was over 100 - who gave their support to the game and a successful afternoon's entertainment for the village.

Little Staughton Tornados....

With four runs off two balls required to secure victory for Little Staughton, a nail biting finish to an enjoyable evening’s cricket was guaranteed yesterday evening as LS took on the Tax enforcers!
Staughton’s fielding was punctuated with some shining stars in the form of Bob’s three well deserved wickets and some less commendable catching, which resulted in Middleton senior having three catches dropped (one by himself!).
With a creditable target of 94 to chase, Staughton’s run rate was initially pedestrian until Ollie Jordan was able to punish some wayward balls and send fielders scurrying into the surrounding fields and hedges. The run rate required was challenging right up until the final delivery. Gregson was able to clinch the match for LS with some well placed boundary shots resulting in victory.
The evening was completed with our own Tornado fly past courtesy of Clive’s son who is stationed at Marham.

Once again clouds dispersed to reveal blue skies and warm summer evening. Another fine win for LSVCC against Aircraft Research Establishment, and as usual played in fine spirit. Alround good bowling performance, notably Maya, and top of the order batting (Jody, Adrian, James). Fielding sometimes sublime, often ridiculous...Tony once again look set for long innings, but let down by incorrect footwear. Marie out shopping right now for studs...

Prayers answered as sun came out to dry pitch, and good crowd gathered to watch evening spectacle.....16 overs a side finished with LSVCC win in last over. Played in good spirit, and good conditions...credit to Groundsman Ben T who also took a wicket in his first ever cricket match ! Notable fielding performance from Clive, which may have taken wind out of batting somewhat, but also very promising debut performance. Good knocks from Jody (stand in captain while Hoppy polishing combine...) and Phil W. Final runs from AT who it should be noted has only let through 1 bye in 2 matches while behind stumps. Performance of day from Bob, who bowled beautiful in swingers to top of off-stump. Finished off with beer, fish and chips in Crown to usual excellent standard..thanks again to Maria and Kevin, as I'm sure we will repeat !

Incidentally, visiting Professor from Hamburg thoroughly enjoyed experience, and thinking of setting up home team...pointed out to him that there has been cricket in Germany since middle of 19th century due to links with public schools. Also discovered that all cricket disbanded there at time of WW2 as was politically inappropriate to associate with English game....Now there is even a German Cricket Board !

Just a note of thanks from the Baptist Chapel/C.Saunderson XI for the game on Friday evening. We all thought it was great fun and played in exactly the right spirit. A final over result in a close game was an excellent finish even if we were the losing side. Fish & Chips was a welcome addition and we’re looking forward to repeating the occasion next year. If it’s as close next year I won’t bowl the final over a avoid going for a maximum over long on!

For those who were asking....

Hastati: One of three categories of heavy infantryman in the Roman Legion of the mid-republican period (3rd and 2nd century BC). The Hastati were the youngest soldiers, and formed the front line of the legion. The standard legion contained ten maniples of Hastati, each numbering between 120 and 160 men. They were equipped with two Pila, the famous Gladius, and a long semi-cylindrical body shield, made of calfskin stretched over plywood. As the soldiers had to pay for their own armour, most made do with a simple bronze chest plate, while the wealthier soldiers had either a mail or scale cuirass. The Hastati were expected to take the first clash of battle and blunt the enemy attack before the second line, the Principes.

Grand Opening..

Clouds broke up for grand opening of LS sports pavilion by members of Pathfinders squadron 109 based at LS in WW2 (and from whom club motto has been borrowed http://www.wartimememories.co.uk/airfields/littlestaughton.html). Excellent turn out from villagers, and fine words from Chairman of PC Tony Moss. Big effort from many in village rewarded by new facility. Event celebrated with champagne and large spread. Many thanks to all ladies and gents who helped on the day particularly Mary, Marie, Julie, Julia, and Kanchan.

Onto the serious business of cricket game against Kimbolton. Despite plying the opposition with champagne, ale, and cakes, prior to start Kimbolton pulled off narrow victory against youngish LS side (age range 8 to ?). Highlights of the day included John Cutts '5-for', failing eyesight of one umpire (Martin Banks), Bob's spectacular catch, numerous spectacular dropped catches (Captain Hoppy leading by example here), father and daughter run out combination (Maya throw from boundary to dad behind stumps), Julia Harris's marvellous cakes at tea time, and Tony Moss's valiant attempt to hold up one end (golden duck). All retired to The Crown for sustenance. Other comments and memories welcome.

Captaincy debate....

I was impressed with Adrians approach last year. Strengths lie in blatant intimidation of opposition and umpires employed so successfully against LS CC. Weaknesses difficult to establish, perhaps a little too severe on injured team mates.

Tony of course adds that extra strategic dimension and given todays technology he could still captain on a "virtual" basis even while in Africa.

Given hoppys anorak approach this wouldn't be the case whilst on a combine.

Jasons too involved with property development whilst Ian Harris has yet to prove himself at the lowest level.

Jeremy will be applying his trade elsewhere if the MCC grapevine is to be believed

That leaves Roy Hopperton, Martin Banks and Pete Pullan and it's difficult to make a case for any of these without a huge stretch of ones imagination.

I have my supporters but I'll be spending more time with an extended family, which one remains to be seen.

To conclude I'd take Adrian as Captain with Tony offering added value governance from deep third man.

Please find attached a financial statement on the expenditure for the Sports Pavilion.

There are a couple of points that I would like to bring to your attention.
There is an excess of expenditure over budget, but the budget numbers did not include VAT
The VAT return does mean that we have un-budgeted expenditure of nearly £400, although over 50% of this is for local council services (planning and building control)
We have received the payment from the Rural Grants
There is no further major work to be completed, at this stage. But there is still work to be completed, when funds permit. Mary Jordan is considering ways of raising further funding for the playing field, which will be a new source of funding.

Any other ideas, suggestions or thoughts will be gratefully received, can I suggest that you contact Mary in this instance.

I am very pleased to advise that the Sports Pavilion erection has now been completed. But as with this type of project there is an amount of "post construction" work to be completed. In the short term we should consider:
provide a means of security/cover for the windows;
provide guttering and drainage (recommended by Hodgsons);
possibly provide solar security lights to deter;
clear away rubbish and tidy up the area around the base;
lay block paving to the front of the pavilion (we have been offered some FOC from Marshalls);
provide a ramp for disabled access;
arrange a formal opening of the pavilion
In the longer term - hopefully as capital development we could consider the provision of water and power supply.

Any suggestions or further ideas for development that I have omitted from the mail, then please do let me know. Or if anybody has any ready made solutions then it wouldbe good to hear of them.

Insurance cover has been arranged and the final payment made to Hodgsons, so the pavilion is ours.

I currently have the keys if anybody needs them, I will also lodge a set with Marion.

We do have a series of pictures that we should collate, not only for the feedback to the grant organisations but to act as record of achievement within the village.

Finally on behalf of the Parish Council and the village, I would like to thank you all for the tremendous effort and hard work that each of you has contributed to get where we are today. It is very much appreciated and has been fun as well.

We have started so now we need to continue and move forward
